Google continued its dominance of the U.K. search engine market, garnering three of every four online searches there during February, according to survey data announced Friday by WebSideStory.The Mountain View, California based search firm enjoys market share dominance in Europe that surpasses its U.S. position, where it nevertheless typically records a market share of more than 50 percent.

Google scored a partial victory in its battle to keep its search data out of the hands of the government. Yet that could prove to be just one win in a long-running war.U.S. District Judge James Ware this month ruled that Google must turn over 50,000 URLs from its index to the Department of Justice, but not customers’ search queries as requested by the department. The government hopes to use Google’s data to prove that Internet filters aren’t enough to shield minors from adult material online as part of its case to reinstate the 1998 Child Online Protection Act, which the courts blocked when the ACLU and other groups challenged the law’s constitutionality.

If someone came to you and said “I want to rent out your mail server. I’d like to send out some emails from your server, and I’ll give you $X to do it,” you’d be suspicious and probably say no–unless you wanted your mail server to end up on email blacklists. In the same way, if someone comes to you and says “I’ll give you $X to rent subdomains, subdirectories, or pages from you. Just link to my doorway pages from your content,” I would recommend to say no as well. It can affect the reputation of your domain if you host doorway pages for someone else and then that other person creates spam on the pages on your domain.

Since the initial launch, Google News has added support for many different languages and countries, added customization to create specific sections just for you, supported sign-on with a Google Account so that you can get you customized news anywhere you want, improved the scoring to find more relevant news sources, and added support for RSS/Atom feeds. With the launch of recommended and “most popular” news stories, Google News is leaving beta.
