LG introduces privacy feature for screens

Privacy is crucial for travelers who need to conduct business with their laptops even while on the road.

LG now has an answer to this need with its new LG Display, a new 14.1 inch panel that has a viewing-angle image control feature.

The VIC feature allows you to change the viewing angle of the screen on both sides to 60 degrees by just touching the display. The VIC is actually a fourth sub-pixel added to the usual red, blue and green sub-pixels.

Expect to see this new display in a few months as production will begin this October.

Fujitsu plans to sell HD business

Fujitsu, Ltd. has built a reputation for manufacturing sturdy but relatively affordable hard drives. So it came as a surprise when news came out that the Japanese company is in talks with Western Digital Corp. and other companies about selling its hard drive business. Apparently, Fujitsu’s hard drive division has been losing money.

The company is reportedly intent on selling their hard drive business by year end because of pressures on the company attributed to price declines.

A successful bid from Western Digital will allow the company to further expand its presence in the laptop hard drives sector, a crucial move as it tries to narrow the gap between it and current number one Seagate.

Endless months of speculation has finally become official.

Google is entering the browser market with a free web browser.

Google Chrome, a seven megabyte application is now available for download in over 122 countries and is available in 43 languages. The browser has version a for Windows, but the Mac and Linux versions are still in development.

According to Google engineers, what they wanted to build was not a content viewer but a window manager for web pages and apps.

One cool thing about Google Chrome is that it is going to be an open source application, so expect tweaks and improvements to come out very soon.

I’ve tried Chrome today and I have to say I am impressed with its speed. If the development towards the first official release continues, Chrome could become a strong contender in the browser market.

Sandisk to enter SSD market

Sandisk is one of the most popular flash memory and storage card brands in the world and its recent announcement to finally enter the ultra affordable PC business is just a natural extension of its business. The company announced that it is going to provide solid-state drives to the PC sector, which is a great move business-wise because of the growing demand for SSDs and semi-conductor based memory devices employing NAND flash memory chips. Sandisk’s move to this lucrative market could even be seen as a threatening move on the HD market dominated by Seagate.

The high cost of SSDs has been the major obstacle that prevents these devices from enjoying a bigger share in the market but with prices dropping and demand for SSDs rising, this issue may be a moot one in the near future.

Will SSDs become the new standard for laptops in the near future? I’m betting that it will.
