After Jeff asked for a password manager to use on a USB stick, I thought I should make a little list of free password storing software, compatible with thumb drives.
- Keepass is a free, open source application, managing a password database for you.
Not only can it be installed on thumb drives, but it’s also cross-platform compatible. Ideal for Operating System jumpers.
Be sure not to forget your master password tho. ;-) - Password Safe is another open source password manager which can be installed on USB drives.
Password Safe protecs your password with the TwoFish algorithm. Password Safe only runs on Windows. - If you only need to store 20 passwords, you can always use the freeware version of Password Depot.
Lately there has been a growing amount of online password managers, but as the name says : online. I certainly am no fan of storing all my data online. And honestly, I don’t know any program which beats the features KeePass.
You can of course also use PGP encryption and send yourself an encrypted email with all your passwords. Obviously you’ll generate a separate PGP key for this. I’ll give you a hint : portable Thunderbird is your friend. ;-)
