When I got my MacBook, one of the main deciding factors was that I wanted a “real” laptop with an optical drive. While I loved practically everything that my MSI Wind had to offer (especially the portability), I missed the convenience of having an optical drive when I needed it. Then again, I think I can count the number of times I have used the optical drive in my MacBook using only one hand!
Speaking of computers with no optical drive, Fujitsu seems to think that optical drives are not that necessary anymore. With their new Lifebook, the optical drive has been done away with. In lieu of the optical drive, Fujitsu has included a pico projector!
Where you would normally find an optical drive, you will find a pico projector in the Fujitsu LIFEBOOK S761/C. Pretty cool actually. If you think about it, you really don’t need an optical drive these days. And if you really need one, an external device will do the trick. While you can say the same about a projector, an embedded one can save you a lot of headache, especially if you give presentations on a regular basis. I can already imagine business people jumping to grab one of these so that they don’t have to worry about connecting to projectors when on a business trip.
The technical details of this new Lifebook include a 13.3-inch LCD with 1,366×768 resolution, an Intel Core i5-2520M CPU (2.50GHz), 1GB of RAM, a 160GB HDD, and Windows 7 Professional(32bit). As for the projector, it produces images in 800×600 resolution.
For now, the new Lifebook is going to be sold in Japan. The price tag is rather hefty, though, at $2,690. There is also another version, the LIFEBOOK P771/C. This one has a 12.1-inch screen and 1,280×800 resolution. It’s priced at $3,120.
