Firefox 3.0 downloaded 8 million times

Firefox 3.0 could really go into the record books. From the first twenty-four hours of its release, the latest version of the popular web browser reached 8 million downloads.

The latest Firefox version officially went live after 3pm Eastern time. Downloaders came from more than 200 countries with the top countries including the US, Germany, Japan, Spain, the UK, France, Iran, Italy, Canada and Poland.

Mozilla has said that it wants to be in the Guiness Book of World Records for most downloaded software in a day. Actually, there is no such entry in the book but the company is hoping that its feat will actually merit the addition. It will take a few more days before things get official.

Mozilla’s Firefox 3.0 has been officially released today. If I were you I would suggest that you get the browser today so you can join in Mozilla’s attempt to set a Guinness Book of World Records entry for most downloaded software.

Taking aside the Guinness attempt though, Firefox 3.0 is a must-have app. I am using it right now and I have never seen Firefox this fast and robust. It is quite zippy and rendering pages in some of my favorite websites is almost instantaneous. I’ve noticed how fast it is because I was browsing a website with version 2 and then after installing 3 I browsed through the same site and it was really noticeably faster. The other features look like it will become as useful as the tabbed browsing that it used before Microsoft decided to use it on Internet Explorer as well.

New ASUS laptop carries 1tb storage

ASUS is on a roll in terms of coming out with buzz-worthy products over the last few months. It’s newest coup is the first laptop that carries a terabyte of storage. before you start wondering though, it’s not really one harddrive but two 500GB harddrives. The nifty thing here is how they have managed to fit two HDs in such a svelte machine.

The specs are no slouch either, the ASUS M70 has a 17-inch WUXGA display, Altec Lansing speakers and it is powered by an Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 ~T7700/T8100/T8300/T9300 processor, ATI Mobile Radeon HD3650 with 1G VRAM, DDRII 667 as well as Blu-ray capabilities.

There’s no word yet on the price or even the battery life of this baby. Hopefully, the price will be something that would also be worthy of a blog entry.

US Customs officials can search laptops without a warrant

Laptop users who frequently travel to the US may have to contend with far stricter measures regarding the data in your laptops.

A US Appeals Court ruling this week declared that customs officials working at the Los Angeles International Airport did not violate a man’s rights when they decided to tamper his computer in searching for alleged child pornography files.

The exact statement of Judge Diarmuid o’Scannlain was “We are satisfied that reasonable suspicion is not needed for customs officials to search a laptop or other personal electronic storage devices at the border.”

The case began in 2005 when Michael Arnold, returned from a his trip to the Philippines. He was found to have been carrying a laptop, a separate hard drive, memory cards as well as six compact discs. Officials requested Arnold to open his laptop and turn it on and two icons identified as photos were seen on the desktop. When officials clicked on the folders they saw images of naked women. He was detained and questioned for several hours. A thorough search of his computer was made and allegedly what looks like child porn was discovered.

Another UMPC has been spotted in the market. The Astone UMPC looks to battle it out with the leader ASUS with its quite formidable specs.

The Astone UMPC also features a 7-inch screen that can display up to 600 x 480. The machine depends on VIA components. Its processor is a VIA C7-M that is rated at between 1.5 to 2ghz speed. Default RAM is 1gb, and the hard drive capacity is a whopping 30GB — compare that to the ASUS’ 8gb SSD feature. The Astone UMPC ships without an OS, so it’s up to you what kind of OS you want to use.

The Astone, which is priced similarly to the ASUS EEE, has what it takes to threaten ASUS’ dominance in the UMPC market.
