Everyday, when I check out the news online, I see at least one piece talking about a stolen laptop and related topics. In spite of the widespread use of laptops (or perhaps because of that, actually), thefts seem to be more prevalent. Perhaps the temptation is too strong for thieves, and perhaps there is also some negligence on the part of some users.

What the thieves do is beyond our control, but as for negligence, there is a lot we can do about that. Just a short while back, I wrote about the SAFElinkTM Anti-Theft Service, which is a good way to secure your data and even possibly retrieve your laptop in case of theft. There are other similar options, but many of them are, understandably, offered for a fee.

Here comes the good news – I just discovered a laptop security service that you can use for free. Yup, you read that right – FREE. It is called LockItTight, and it functions pretty much the same way that other security services do.

You first have to download LockItTight ((Download it here.)) to your laptop, after which, you can totally forget it – until your laptop is stolen, maybe. This tiny program is virtually untraceable, making it the perfect tracker. What it does can be summarized in six points:

  • Location Tracking. The software reports the laptop’s location to your LockItTight account regularly. If you can’t find your laptop, you only have to log in to your account using another device and pinpoint your laptop’s location.
  • Screen Shots. This feature gives you an idea what your laptop is being used for.
  • Webcam Capturing. The ultimate proof – a web cam photo of the person using your laptop, who is presumably the thief as well.
  • Key Logging. This will give you data to make it easier for you to hunt the culprit down.
  • File Tracking. This allows you to retrieve and wipe your data remotely.
  • Encrypted Reports. LockItTight employs high security measures to ensure that your data in their servers are locked down tight.

Again, the best thing is that all this is for free, but yes, there is a catch. One, you can only use the free version for one laptop. Two, the free version reports the laptop’s location only every two hours. To use the software for more than one laptop and to customize the settings, you can get the paid version for as low as $1.99 a month per laptop. Another thing is that it is only compatible with Windows.

The amount of empty cartridges produced by printer users all over the world on a daily basis is such that an entire landfill can be filled by within months.  This is very alarming considering that environmental experts say that it would take about a thousand years for the plastic in the cartridges to decompose.  Given this scenario, the world will be buried in trash in no time if something is not done about it.

Fortunately, something is being done to prevent this from happening at least in relation to empty  ink cartridges.  Many ink cartridges can be reused and refilled for about four times more before being rendered unusable.  After which, they can be sent to designated recycling agencies as instructed by manufacturers or to different entities and organizations accepting the recyclable ink cartridges.

Although many get away with tossing empty cartridges straight into the trash, this is not the responsible thing to do.  By taking the extra effort to bring the cartridges to recycling centers, people are contributing considerably to prevent the exacerbation of environmental problems.  There are just some important things to remember before sending the cartridges on their way.

Cartridges sent for recycling should be in good condition.  Any break or damage will be cause for rejection.  This will be especially unfortunate since recycling centers usually pay for these.  Make sure the cartridge numbers are included in the list accepted by recycling centers and this can easily be verified online.  For convenient shipping, people sending cartridges for recycling can check with their local post offices since most maintain arrangements with recycling centers.  Most postal offices provide postage-paid envelopes for free shipping.

Who wouldn’t want a laptop for free? Even those who already have a laptop or two at home will certainly appreciate acquiring a new one without paying a single cent!

Recently, AtCheap.com announced a contest offering the opportunity to win a free HP laptop, and it’s still open. AtCheap.com is a site which offers comparison services. It does what it says on the tin – you basically search for a product that are looking to purchase. The site then does the tedious task of comparing product prices from more than 60,000 stores. All that is left for you to do is to look at the cheapest prices shown in the search results.

AtCheap.com covers not only laptops but other gadgets such as digital cameras, televisions, mobile phones, mp3 players, and watches. You can also search for and compare products such as clothing, make up, sunglasses, and so on.

The contest is simple. You just need to go the AtCheap web site and sign up. The thing that I am not too sure about is that you need to log in using Facebook. I am a stickler for privacy so when it comes to logging in on other sites, I prefer not to link my Facebook account. Also, you need to invite 25 friends to qualify for the contest. I am not sure, but that sounds a little spammy. Still, if you want that chance to win the laptop, then you might as well go for it.

Based on a press release published by the company ((Press Release)), there are 1,000 laptops up for grabs, and only 500 have been given away so far. After signing up and inviting friends, you simply have to wait for the guys at AtCheap to get in touch with you via e-mail. They will ask for your shipping address, and you just have to wait for that freebie.

It sounds too good to be true, to be honest, but it just might give you that extra laptop to play around with. Or if you really need a laptop, then joining the contest is a no-brainer. Unfortunately, this seems to be a US-only promo, so those of us in other parts of the world will have to sit this one out.
