Dell marks March 26 for Adamo availability

Last January Dell released details about the Adamo, a new laptop that is being touted to be an Apple Macbook Air killer. But details were a little sketchy on when we will actually see it.

But Dell has finally revealed the actual ship date for the much publicized machine. March 26 is when we will see the world thinnest laptop — yes, it’s thinner than the Macbook Air. Measuring at just 0.65 inches thick. it is 1/10 of an inch thinner than the Macbook Air. What it lost in thickness though it has gained in weight as, at 4 pounds, it is heavier than the Macbook Air’s 3 pounds.

Expect to see two colors when the Adamo is released. There is the silver anodized aluminum version that is etched with interconnecting shapes and will have pearl finish. The other version will be in onyx black and will have a brushed aluminum lid.

Prices of the Adamo will start at $1,999.

Intel extends life of Pentium brand with new market segment

Intel has recently made a move to give renewed life to the Pentium brand by positioning it as the main “performance brand” for the mobile computer segment of the market. The move is expected to create an ultrathin notebook segment that is placed just above netbooks.

The company acknowledges that the netbook segment is enjoying great sales and is expected to still grow this year. But Intel also believes that by 2010 and beyond, the traditional laptop market will make a stronger impact and go back to double digit growth rates. Although the key to success will lie on how the laptops will be designed and marketed. This opinion was based on an Intel study conducted in 2008 which showed that only 11.6 percent would take their laptop outside. But 23 percent would consider lugging around an ultraportable device.

Intel said that it firmly believes that it can create new device category where what it calls as ultra thin laptops will be lumped with.

Mozilla releases new versions of Fennec mobile browser

Mozilla announced that it will be releasing two new version of the Fennec mobile browser, a few days before the imminent release of Firefox 3.5.

Fennec 1.0 Beta 2 for the Maemo Nokia software and development platform, and Fenn 1.0 Alpha 2 for Windows Mobile can now be downloaded at Mozilla’s site. There are also desktop builds that users can install on Windows, Mac and Linux.

The Fennec browsers have been designed to make the user experience easier. A new theme that is more eye-pleasing is now used and a number of usability issues have also been addressed. Installing add-ons on the browser has also been improved, along with the download manager.

Mozilla also revamped the installation of add-ons, improved its download manager, and upgraded the look of the application, Parmenter wrote.

I’m definitely going to try this browser on my Nokia. I’m always on the lookout for a better browser experience on a mobile and right now Nokia’s default browser and Opera Mini is just not cutting it. Hopefully, Fennec will end my quest for a great mobile browser.

Coby goes into netbook market

Mention the word Coby and you probably won’t find anyone who knows that it’s an electronics brand. But apart from selling mp3 players and portable DVD players, Coby apparently also entered the laptop market. The manufacturer actually opened a booth at the CES showroom showcasing its notebook product.

The NBPC892 is the company’s netbook product that features an 8.9 ich screen, an Intel Atom N270 and a large 160 or 500GB hard drive. The Coby netbook can run either XP or Linux and has 1 to 2GB of RAM. It even has a built in 1.3 megapixel webcam.

No price has been set yet for this product but I’d be more concerned about support and durability from Coby.

Western Digital to release 2TB hard drive

Western Digital is really making its presence felt in the hard drive sector. The company has announced the release of its 2 terabyte hard drive. This first product is an internal hard drive but there are already plans to release an external version.

The WD Caviar Green 2TB, will be priced at $299. There will also be versions in smaller 1.5 terabytes and 1 terabyte capacities.

WD’s decision to release a 2TB drive is to answer a growing consumer demand to release higher capacity storage because of growing media libraries and increasing space requirements for many applications.
