Lenovo announces 6 ThinkPads with Centrino 2

Lenovo has annonced new ThinkPad laptops as well as three ThinkPad SL-series laptops to its line of notebook computers. The great thing here is that these new gizmos will carry Intel’s new Centrino 2 processor.

The real cool line here is the SL series though.

The SL series notebooks will have new computer care software and will also give users the option of getting a service package that features online data backup and on-site warranty repair. The SL line will also have mobile broadband connectivity and multimedia features. There is even an option to outfit it with a Blu-ray DVD player.

Other features will include high speed mobile broadband, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, Bluetooth, the Active Protection system (it protects the hard drive from bumps and falls), and even an optional fingerprint reader.

I’ll definitely look out for these Lenovo SL notebooks.

New Intel Classmate to sport Atom, touchscreen

Intel’s Classmate PC was one of the first concept projects on affordable laptops. But it was beaten to the market by other products and the first two generations of the Classmate itself were designed a bit poorly (the elementary lunchbox look was one of the worst industrial design concepts ever).

The third generation of the Intel Classmate is a case of learning from your previous mistakes. The new product is touted to have a touchscreen as well as tablet capabilities. What’s more, it will also sport the Intel Atom processor.

Here’s hoping that Intel finally get its right this time. A successful Classmate will surely bring the prices of netbooks down.

Mixed feelings about WWDC

I eagerly awaited Apple CEO Steve Jobs’ keynote speech at the Worldwide Developer Conference ’08. As you know, I’ve been shopping around for a Mac for my wife and I was thinking that this keynote speech could be the venue for Jobs to announce new Macs.
It was a bit underwhelming personally when I found out that he only announced the next iPhone – the iPhone 3G. Don’t get me wrong, the new iPhone is awesome and with the great price point I am surely going to get me one when it arrives. It’s just that personally, I was hoping to give my wife a possibly new-gen Mac.

This only means that I’ll have to settle for the present generation Mac for her.

Lenovo releases its first desktop PC in the US

While various electronics manufacturers are dipping their feet on the portable/laptop market pool, top laptop maker Lenovo is doing the opposite.

The company has released its first consumer PC in the US called the IdeaCentre k210 desktop PC. The new PC will be made available in newegg.com, J&R, Tiger Direct and B&H Photo/Video at a price point that starts at $379 after a mail-in rebate of $100.

Specs of the IdeaCentre will vary for each retailer as some will have the Lenovo Bright Eye camera, Veriface and Bright Vision software. This nifty gadget will allow users to log in securely by merely looking at the camera using facial recognition technology.

The K210 IdeaCentre will get a procies “up to” the Intel Core 2 Quad. It will have 3GB of memory, integrated Intel GMA 310 graphics and HDs that will range from 320 to 520GBs as well as a 16-in-1 card reader. A choice of DVD burner or Bluray player will be made available, too.
