I have discovered a new use for the laptop: entertaining a very bored, very active pre-schooler. When I need to take an important business call, and he has to stay absolutely quiet, I open Microsoft Word. He then happily types away. It’s actually helped him learn his alphabet, even if sometime he gets chocolate on the keyboard.
Parents, take note of this form of emergency entertainment. My wife has a lot of kid-friendly sites bookmarked on her laptop, including Disney and a number of dinosaur cartoons and Barney videos on YouTube. She uses it to entertain him at the long waits in the doctor’s office.
Kind of cool to have a kid who’s tech savvy. His grandmother got him a toy laptop, one of those educational things with bright buttons. He plays with it right before bedtime. Last night, when it was time to turn off the lights and go to sleep, he held up his hand and said, “Wait. I’m not yet finished. I have to check my email.”
That’s my boy.
